Kohala Voices (Spring 2024)
Kohala Voices: Youth Documentary Film Program captures and shares the diverse experiences and perspectives of Kohala kūpuna. The program creates a video archive that reflects the shared history, cultural richness, and collective wisdom of Kohala’s past and present inhabitants. Students learned oral history methodology and filmmaking to capture kūpuna stories on video. The program partnered with Kohala Unupa‘a, a youth program that exposes students to cultural, historical and environmental resources in Kohala.
The project preserves cultural heritage, explores narratives and identity, fosters connections, provides historical context, engages with ethical considerations, enables interdisciplinary learning, promotes cultural interpretation, emphasizes narrative expression, encourages reflective learning, and facilitates community engagement.
