Plantation Stories

Stories of plantation days and growing up in Kohala.

Plantation Stories

This project features Kohala’s kūpuna (elders) sharing their experiences of growing up in Kohala and living and working on the Kohala Sugar Plantation. The kūpuna discuss the changes that have occurred since the closing of the plantation and what makes Kohala special to them. Their stories provide valuable insights into Kohala’s history and cultural heritage, and provide lessons in how to “Keep Kohala Kohala.”

Stories recorded from December 2021 – July 2022.

The Kohala Oral History Project engages community, illuminates history, and promotes the notion that every person makes history.
